Richmond and Sullivan win SILVER in Boys' Doubles at OFSAA.
Niagara Falls wasn't as scenic due to the poor weather in the first week of May, but that didn't stop our players from enjoying the OFSAA experience, some for the last time as they end their high school badminton careers.
The boys doubles team of James Richmond and Michael Sullivan won silver in the 'B' flight. The team easily won their first match but lost their second in a close contest with the number 4 seeded team of the tournament. This moved them from 'A' to 'B' flight and they advanced to the final on Saturday. Unfortunately, their play in the final day of the tournament did not reflect their abilities as they struggled in the gold medal match. Regardless, it was an exceptional finish as it was Sullivan's first all-Ontario experience, and a second silver for Richmond, though in a different event. (He won silver with Lisa Shi in mixed doubles 2 years ago.)
Suzie Guo and Winnie Li also had a strong tournament, finishing amongst the top 8 in the 'A' flight, having not lost a match until going down against the number 2 seed, and then the number 3 seed in quarter-final play. This ends a remarkable career for these two girls, who have won EOSSAA and thus competed at OFSAA twice.
Bowei Han and Nick Speranzini discovered how difficult it is to compete in the strongest talent pool of the tournament. They also graduate this year and thus end their respective high school badminton careers.
Congratulations to the other graduates: Matt Street, Danny Albrecht, Denny Elliot, Kevin Myers, Mark Walden, Alex Owens, Esther Son, Stefana Dranga, Kirstin Petterson, and George Zhou. Good luck to you guys - it's been a pleasure.
Mackenzie wins team trophy at EOSSAA for third consecutive year
Leading the way with gold medal finishes were: in girls doubles (Suzie Guo & Winnie Li), boys doubles (James Richmond & Michael Sullivan), and boys singles (Bowei Han). The team total was capped with the silver in boys singles (Nick Speranzini). These six athletes will compete at OFSAA during the first weekend of May in Niagara Falls.
The remaining 6 players from Mackenzie all made it out of round robin play. Kirstin & Brandon Petterson beat out Gillian Kyle and Kevin Myers for bronze in mixed doubles, and Jeff Lalor & George Zhou also won bronze in boys doubles.
Thanks to Mrs. Susan Sullivan and Mr. Lorne Petterson for helping with the transport of the athletes to and from Casselman. An enjoyable time was had by all participants!
The Fellowes team of Nagora & Shields will be in Niagara Falls as well due to their silver medal performance in girls doubles.
Results from April 17, 2008 UOVHSAA county tournament.
